Kerry Washington Image Awards – Kerry Washington was the star to beat at the 2013 NAACP Image Awards where she snagged three awards and stole much of the spotlight on the red carpet.
The NAACP Image Awards welcomed huge stars such as Halle Berry, George Lucas, and Jamie Foxx to come together and celebrate one of the liveliest and most energetic award ceremonies of the year.
Hiring comedian Steve Harvey to host the awards show only added to the shows already lively nature as he kicked things off by announcing his New Year’s resolution wasn’t going over too well.
“My New Year’s resolution this year was no more cussing,” the successful author said on stage. “It ain’t been working out for me, so this might be a little bit more live than they think it’s gonna be.”
Luckily, Harvey managed to keep it clean for the night.
Meanwhile, Kerry Washington – the star of “Scandal” and supporting actress in “Django Unchained” – could barely stay seated during the awards show. Washing nabbed three awards at the 44th NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles, California.
She was named the best actress in a drama series for her role in “Scandal” as well as best supporting actress in “Django Unchained.”
As she accepted her award for the controversial film, she made sure she gave director Quentin Tarantino a special shout out in the midst of the all the backlash he has received for the motion picture.
“I love you, I am grateful to you,” she said. “Thank you for having the courage to tell this story no matter what anybody says. You told this story with love and honor in your heart. You made us laugh, you made us weep and you made us remember. Thank you”
Before the night was over she also grabbed the President’s Award which recognizes outstanding achievement and exceptional public service.
She even got the opportunity to see her new show be named the most outstanding drama series on TV.
Actress Loretta Devine also earned multiple awards that night including outstanding support actress in a drama series for her role in “Gray’s Anatomy” and outstanding performance in a youth/children’s program for her voice over role in “Doc McStuffins” on Disney.
Despite getting mixed in a bit of controversy thanks to his new role in “Django Unchained,” Jamie Foxx was still named the entertainer of the year.
Denzel Washington’s performance in “Flight” wasn’t enough to hide plot line flaws from critics, but it was enough to earn him the best actor award while Viola Davis was named best actress for her role in “Won’t Back Down.”
The stars looked fabulous as they made their way to the stage to grab their awards, but first they had to make it past the unforgiving camera lenses on the red carpet.
The good news is, the stars proved that their fashion sense was just as flawless as their on screen performances.
Big winner Kerry Washington looked stunning in a rose pink and mint Oscar de la Renta gown. The ensemble had her looking like a princess while her soft make up and hair pulled away from her face showed off her gorgeous bone structure. She kept the accessories minimal and opted for a simple pink clutch go match the top of her girly girl gown.
“Cloud Atlas” star Halle Berry opted for a simple, but sexy look as she flaunted her curves in a black and gold fitted strapless dress. A simple pair of dangling earrings and a soft lip pulled the look together.
While we weren’t huge fans of Gladys Knight’s dress – which looked like the legendary songstress got into a fight with a grizzly bear over some chicken and waffles – we were still happy to see her hitting the red carpet. The soulful crooner took to the stage to belt out “Memories” for all of the stars who passed away last year and the 68-year-old songstress easily blended in with the surrounding actresses who were all mostly in their mid 30s or early 40s.
“House of Lies” actor Don Cheadle hit the carpet with his long time partner who rocked a natural curly do with a classic navy blue gown and gold accent clutch.
Other celebs including KeKe Palmer, Garcelle Beauvais, LL Cool J, and Tatyana Ali also looked amazing as they made their way down the red carpet.
