Will Smith is a man of a few well-paying pursuits, including acting, film production and creating eye-catching digital content, but the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” may have his eyes set on politics one day in the future.
The revelation of what life after Hollywood could be was unveiled during a conversation Smith had on the “Pod Save America” podcast. The show’s co-host Jon Favreau asked Smith, “What has made you think about entering politics and running, and what so far has prevented you taking the leap?”
“I think for now I’ll let that office get cleaned up a little bit and then I’ll consider that at some point down the line,” Smith responded in part, while alluding to eyeing the Oval Office.
He continued, “I absolutely have an opinion, I’m optimistic, I’m hopeful, I believe in understanding between people and I believe in the possibility of harmony. I will certainly do my part, whether it remains artistic or, at some point, ventures into the political arena.”
While the actor may not have a clear image of what his involvement in politics will look like, he does, however, understand the importance of Americans knowing how equality is laid out in America’s framework, the Constitution, and particularly the 14th Amendment. His latest project, executive producing and hosting “Amend: The Fight for America” on Netflix, explores just that.
“We are in an unprecedented place in American history right now that really demands delicate attention to the movement of what’s happening,” explained the “Bad Boys” franchise actor. “I’m very hopeful, not just for Blacks in America, but I’m hopeful for America as a whole, as an idea, as a country, I’m very hopeful.”
While Smith is full of hope for the future, more than a few people who commented on the interview are hoping the entertainer won’t venture into the political arena following the tenures of Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Donald Trump in their respective political offices.
“Do we REALLY need another frikkin celebrity running for political office?? we can see how well the last one went….”
“Celebrities nowadays think they can sell themselves to be politicians.. they may be activists but running a country is totally different than running a charity…”
“Why was this not written into the constitution. Reagan & Trump were enough as was Swartzenegger in CA…”
