The comedian and internet celebrity Shiggy shot to fame when he danced to Drake‘s 2018 song “In My Feelings” in a video that went viral. And Fabolous wanted the 25-year-old to do the same thing for one of his songs.
The video eventually became known as the “#DoTheShiggy” challenge or the “In My Feelings” challenge, and not only did it help Drake’s catchy tune become a colossal hit, people from all over the globe joined in and recorded their own dance videos.
And celebrities like Will Smith, Ciara, James Harden and Kevin Hart did the challenge as well.
In a clip that was filmed backstage at one of Fabolous’ shows, Fab was seen talking to Shiggy about creating an Instagram post for one of his songs.
The backdrop for the conservation in the clip is on Nov. 29, the Brooklyn rapper dropped the project “Summertime Shootout 3: Coldest Summer Ever,” and he said he had earlier asked Shiggy to create a post for the cut “Choosy,” featuring Davido and Jeremih. But Fabolous didn’t get the answer he was looking for.
“I asked Shiggy to do a post for me, and he said he needed some money,” Fabolous said to the camera. “I posted this guy, like, in 2015.”
Other celebrities were backstage as well, including former NFL player Victor Cruz, musician Ryan Leslie and the Brooklyn rapper Casanova, who told Shiggy that he shouldn’t have charged Fabolous.
Shiggy is from New York like both rappers, and he seems to be friends with them too, which is why he was ripped for charging a fee.
“You getting too corporate,” said Cas in the video. “You got to separate the corporate sometimes, son.”
And although his words seemed to be playful, Casanova blasted Shiggy for not charging Drake for the challenge but charging Fabolous.
“Nah, that’s the only way I eat,” Shiggy said about his promotional social media posts. “That’s my job, bro.”
“It’s not a job to support friends,” someone off camera yelled.
Folks on the internet seemed to get a big kick out of the debate, and many took Fabolous and Casanova to task for trying to get a freebie out of Shiggy.
“All I gotta say is, if I gotta force myself to create a challenge for you you better give me some money,” one person tweeted.
“How they gonna force another grown man to do a paid service for free? Unless we family, I wouldn’t do it either. Casanova a big 🤡 for this.”
“S/o shiggy, I wish he said ‘ yall n—-s aint drake,” another person stated.
But some defended the rappers and said Shiggy should have done them a favor by not charging them.
“Dam Idk bout this I’m tryna figure it out,” one person tweeted. “He definitely in the right for saying I need a check. The Fabolous thing I feel like he can do cause he right. Fab gave some exposure wayyy before shiggy was anybody crazy. Cassanova prob helped before too.”
