One could easily say that 2019 is shaping up to be the year of Regina King.
Because about two months after the actress, director and producer won an Oscar for her role in “If Beale Street Could Talk,” it’s been announced that she has landed a multi-year deal with Netflix.
King’s production company Royal Ties will now produce films as well as series for the streaming company, and her sister Reina King will be head of production.
Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, said the company couldn’t be more excited to partner with such a strong talent in King.
“Regina King is a multi-faceted talent both behind and in front of the camera,” he said in a press release. “She’s been a trailblazer for years, with boundless creativity and impeccable taste in projects, and we couldn’t be more thrilled that she will bring her formidable talents to Netflix.”
King got her Hollywood start in the 1980s by playing Brenda Jenkins on “227” with Marla Gibbs.
She then appeared on the big screen as the tough-talking, 40-ounce-drinking Shalika in John Singleton’s 1991 film “Boyz n the Hood.” In fact, King was one of the first celebrities to share a message about the legendary filmmaker’s recent death.
After “Boyz n the Hood,” a slew of other film roles followed, and King also won three Emmys, including one for her role as Latrice Butler in the series “Seven Seconds.” She’s now filming the HBO series “Watchmen” based on the DC comic book, due out later this year.
King has worked behind the camera as well and directed the season 3 finale of “Insecure” and episodes of “Scandal,“ plus “This is Us.”
In a statement, the mother of one said she’s ecstatic about the Netflix deal and is eager to start creating.
“I am beyond thrilled to join the Netflix family,” said King. “They are at the top of their game and as an artist I am so excited to come play in this wonderful sandbox they have created for storytellers.”
