Meghan McCain sat stone-faced Tuesday as the audience erupted in applause at Sen. Kamala Harris‘ response to criticism over Rep. Rashida Tlaib‘s use of a curse word.
Harris, a California Democrat, sat down with the ladies of “The View“ to discuss her latest memoir “The Truths We Hold: An American Journey,” as well as a rumored bid for president in 2020 and the ongoing government shutdown, which entered its 18th day on Tuesday.
On the list of topics was Rep. Tlaib’s recent comments against President Donald Trump, in which she referred to him as a motherf—-r and advocated for his impeachment. In a now viral clip, Tlaib, who represents Michigan’s 13th Congressional District and is among the first Muslim women to serve in the U.S. Congress, is heard telling a crowd of supporters, “We’re going to go in there, we’re going to impeach the motherf—-r!”
Her remarks came during a reception hosted by public policy advocacy group MoveOn.Org and have sparked quite a bit of controversy.
“What do you think of that kind of rhetoric?” McCain, 34, asked Harris, who’s also been a critic of the president. “Because I was under the impression the Democratic party is ‘when they go low, we go high,’ and now it’s ‘impeach that — I can’t say it on television.”
Harris gave a candid response: “I mean honestly, she’s not the first nor will she be the last elected person to curse in public. And so, that’s my response.”
The audience immediately cheered her candor as McCain sat emotionless.
The senator went on to argue that people are feeling “very passionate” about the state of U.S. right now and are expressing those passions in a myriad of ways.
“I also believe that in the passion. What we also do have to check as a separate matter is that there are also very powerful voices right now in our country that are sowing hate and division among us,” Harris added, drawing more applause from the audience. “And so we also need to check that and deal with that.”
Fans couldn’t help but notice McCain’s lackluster reaction, however, and accused her of being a “sour puss.”
“MM was waiting on the condemnation…..oops!” one Twitter user wrote.
“Kamala Harris cut MM off at the pass,” another chimed in. “There was no way MM could respond negatively to that answer. #KamalaHarris Speaking truth to power.”
A YouTube user agreed, writing, “Meghan always comes at Dems with the bait questions, and gets sidestepped every time. 😂 Kamala fielded that with finesse.”
“Meghan thought she had two talking points, Kamala shut her down both times, w0mp w0mp w0mp 🤣🤣🤣 lol,” another said.
