In her memoir “The Last Black Unicorn,” Tiffany Haddish said that her ex-husband William Stewart physically abused her, but in a recently released audio recording, recorded on what would have been their fifth wedding anniversary, she said he was a good guy.
The abuse is something that Stewart has always denied, and he filed a lawsuit against Haddish, as well as the book’s publisher Simon & Schuster earlier this year for libel defamation and slander.
“You know he’s a good person. He really is a very good person, and he would be perfect for another person, not for me,” Haddish said in the old recording. “I’m a comedian. I’m always out. He’s very traditional. [He] wants his wife at home cooking meals, taking care of his kids and I just have an issue of taking care of somebody else kids.”
Haddish also talked about why she wanted to marry the former policeman, which had a lot to do with his resourcefulness.
“I really felt I could learn something from him,” she said. “Because he was the police, he found my dad. He’s really resourceful, and I was like, ‘Oh. If I ever needed to find information about somebody, he could teach me how to do that.’ And he did, he did teach me how to do that.”
“And I thought he was rich,” added Haddish. “But I guess if you live in Georgia, making $60,000-$80,000..you are f—–’ rich, but in L.A., that’s like, minimal. Then he learned that too, and I tried to tell him that before he came out here, but he learned it the hard way.”
But despite Stewart getting a harsh lesson in how expensive Los Angeles is, Haddish still praised his strong work ethic, which is another thing she found attractive. The comedian also talked about how her ex climbed his way up the career ladder and eventually made the money he needed.
“I just love to watch him grow career wise,” she stated. “He came out here and started working for Sun Anderson, then he went working for Farmer John, he was the safety supervisor over the whole entire plant. Then he went to Nestle with the corporate security stuff. And now he’s at Paramount Pictures, I’m really proud of him, making six figures, doing really good. He’s one of the few Black executives. He’s doing very well.
“I’m very proud of him for that. I admire that about him,” added Haddish. “How he can just go to the next level, and I would like to be able to do that in my career too, and I have done that. But not necessarily on the scale he’s done it in, and I would like to learn how to do that”
