Toni Braxton Says Having Lupus Led to Her Divorce: ‘Who Wants to Take Care of a Person Who’s Sick All the Time’

Toni Braxton was the latest guest on Jada Pinkett Smith‘s “Red Table Talk” and this go-around the topic was divorce.

During the discussion, Braxton opened up about the split from Mint Condition singer Keri Lewis in 2013 after twelve years of marriage and said her Lupus diagnoses may have caused it.

The “Unbreak My Heart” singer said because the illness kept her from working and contributing to household expenses, thus, the financial problems increased.

“I felt shallow because my ex-husband and I broke up for money issues,” she stated. “I found out I had Lupus at the time. I couldn’t make money because I had Lupus. I had to cancel the show. That was my personal contribution to the marriage failing, because who wants to take care of a person who’s sick all the time?”

“I never talked to my ex-husband about it, I probably should have,” Toni continued. “But if I’m going to be completely honest, money was just the decoration on the tree. The tree itself was I felt because I was sick, he left.”

According to the singer, if she would’ve never gotten sick, her marriage would still be intact, because she would’ve been healthy enough to work and eliminate the financial issues.

Of course, Toni is healthy enough to work these days, and she’s busy touring, filming her reality show and making television guest appearances. But the veteran vocalist hates the fact that she had to pay her ex-alimony, even though she made prenup arrangements.

“I was very, very angry about that, but it was because we had an existing prenup and post-nup,” she explained. “I wanted to renege. I’m gonna be honest.”
