‘Freak Freak:’ Jill Scott Responds After Racy Performance Sends Fans into a Frenzy

Jill Scott went viral overnight Monday after her post-performance display left social media users buzzing.

The soul singer was performing on Nov. 12 and when she wrapped up her song, she started acting as if she was giving fellatio to the microphone.

Concert-goers went wild and the actions prompted a flurry of shocked responses online.

“Jill Scott bout to have the brothas throwin they drawz on the stage!!! 😂”

“This Jill Scott video has me questioning a lot 😂😂”

“Yo when Jill Scott did the 2nd hand pepper grinder motion 😩🧐🥰 meet & greet anytime soon…👀”

Still, longtime fans remained unbothered.

“To everyone trippin over Jill Scott’s performance you are clearly NOT real fans. 1. I’ve seen this at several of her concerts. 2. Her lyrics in several of her songs are very sexual. 3. Why would her being sexual during a performance bother anyone in 2018?”

“Looking at my timeline at folks that never listened to Jill Scott’s lyrics or never been to her concerts. Y’all late af. That video is nothing new.”

“Jill Scott been this way at her concerts! You youngins just now recording it on video. #byebabies this grown folk s—!!”

By the early hours of Tuesday, Nov. 13, Scott issued a tongue-in-cheek response to the chatter, effectively patting herself on the back.

“Hi. I sing/act out all kinds of stories. You should cum to my shows. After a Jill Scott show, most people get splendidly laid by whoever they came with😁👍🏽🎶🤪🎉 #iftheydontFitup #stopfrontinusuckd—too They also usually go on 2happier, more productive, focused, wealthy lives.”

Fans responding to her tweet had zero problems backing her up.

“Well played… 😉”

“*15 year crush intensifies*”

“Yaaaas Queen, let these chirren know … You been an open SEXUAL GODDESS … Ain’t nothing to hide.”

“Hear me out on this…..You should invent …a Jilldo.”

“Wealthy lives?? When your next show?😂”

Independent journalism still matters.

We hope this story was worth your time. For over 14 years, Atlanta Black Star has stayed Black-owned and independently run. We didn't get here by waiting on ad budgets that were never built to prioritize us. Our readers did that.

Corporate support for Black media has always been thin. Outlets like ours get roughly 1% of the $170 billion spent on U.S. advertising each year, and that margin is shrinking further as advertisers walk back the DEI-linked commitments they made in 2020. That's the backdrop. It's not why we're asking.

The wider picture isn't any steadier. Newspaper ad revenue has fallen more than 80% since 2005, and local newsrooms are closing at a rate of roughly two a week nationwide. When outlets go under, it's rarely the ones built to center a Black perspective from the ground up that get to stick around.

We know a request for support isn't why you came here. But without readers choosing to fund this work directly, the depth of reporting we can do at home and abroad shrinks along with everyone else's. If you're not in a position to give, that doesn't change how much we value you as a reader.

If you are able to, a recurring contribution does more for us than a single one-time gift, because it lets us plan the next investigation instead of just the next invoice. It takes about 30 seconds, no long form, no account. Thank you for continuing to support independent journalism and freedom of the press.
