Denzel Washington stepped out looking stylishly comfortable in a blazer and sneakers for the premiere of his latest film “Flight” in New York City. The premiere took place at Alice Tully Hall and was a part of the 2012 New York Film Festival. Accompanied by his wife Pauletta, Washington made his way down the red carpet along with co-stars Don Cheadle, John Goodman and Melissa Leo.
Washington stars in the film as a pilot who saves a passengers from a plane crash. According to DNAinfo, a post-crash investigation uncovers some suspicious information about the cause of the crash. The film, which isn’t scheduled for wide release until November 2, is already generating Oscar buzz. Reviews of the film have generally been positive. “But Washington keeps it alive and real at all times as a man who, a failed marriage and an estranged son aside, would seem to have had things his own way most of his life and has never been forced to take a clear-eyed look at himself,” the Hollywood Reporter’s Todd McCarthy said of Washington’s performance. “The actors hits notes that are tricky and nuanced and that he’s never played before, contributing to a large, layered performance that defines the film.”
Reviewers were also impressed with director Robert Zemeckis, whose directing credits include Cast Away and the Back to the Future franchise. “Beyond its impressive special effects (a touchstone of Zemeckis’ career), ‘Flight’ foregrounds movie stars in firm control of their material, particularly its leading man: Denzel Washington delivers one of his most astute roles in years as Captain Whip Whitaker, the alcoholic pilot of a doomed plane who manages to land it in a spectacular feat before dealing with the investigation into his culpability,” wrote Eric Zohn for Indie Wire. “Zemeckis’ tight direction jives nicely with John [Gatins]’ long-admired screenplay, resulting in a stylishly engaging character study with bold stabs at big ideas.”
