Denver police say someone fired a single shot through the window of President Barack Obama’s Denver campaign office.
Police spokeswoman Raquel Lopez says people were inside the office when the shooting happened Friday afternoon, but no one was injured. A large panel of glass was left shattered at the office on West Ninth Avenue near Acoma Street.
Lopez says investigators are looking at surveillance video, but have not yet confirmed a description of a vehicle that might be linked to the shooting. Police didn’t immediately release other details while detectives pursue leads.
Lopez says she isn’t aware of any previous threats against the campaign office, but the incident underscores the heightened polarization of our nation’s politics as the Nov. 6 election nears.
Ideologues on both sides of the political spectrum have become especially charged up in what appears to be a very tight presidential race. Extremist elements on the right have long been critical of President Obama, but many of the attacks have been racially-tinged.
Lopez said the Secret Service, which protects President Obama, was not involved in the investigation Friday, although the agency’s involvement would depend on what Denver police find.
Obama was in Washington on Friday.
In other news, the president will appear on “The Daily Show” on Thursday, Comedy Central announced on Friday.
It will be his sixth guest visit to Jon Stewart’s program, and his second since taking office as president. He also appeared on “The Daily Show” days before the election in 2008.
Stewart recently engaged in a mock presidential debate with Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly in Washington.
“The Daily Show” airs Monday through Thursday at 11 p.m.
