Taraji P. Henson Plays a Hit Woman In ‘Proud Mary’ Trailer

The influence of the 1970s Blaxploitation era of filmmaking on popular culture has been evident for some time now. From movies like “Austin Powers in Goldmember” and “Jackie Brown” to the no-nonsense pimp persona popularized in “Superfly” and “The Mack” that has been assumed by hip-hop’s most prominent artist such as Snoop Dogg, the impact of the Blaxploitation style doesn’t seem like it’s going anywhere soon.

The nod to the era is evident in the new trailer for “Proud Mary.” The movie stars Taraji P. Henson, who plays Mary, a hit women for an organized crime family who sees her life turned upside down when she crosses paths with a young boy after a mission goes awry.

Henson stars alongside Danny Glover and Neal McDonough, as well as newcomer Jahi Winston, who played young Ralph Tresvant in the recent “The New Edition Story” biopic. The film is set to premiere Jan. 12, 2018.
