Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s niece Alveda King claims Democrats’ attempt to derail Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ confirmation was another effort by Democrats to play the “race card” to divide Americans.
The frequent Fox News contributor shared her insight on the recent failed political maneuver where Democrats tried to convince senators not to confirm Sessions by reading a 1986 letter from Coretta Scott King condemning him for his lack of commitment to Black rights.
During her, Wednesday, Feb. 8, appearance on Fox Business, King said that Democrats used her aunt for political brownie points and to rile up the American people.
“It’s almost like a bait and switch,” King explains. “Stir up their emotions, use the name of King — and my name is Alveda King — stir up people’s emotions, play the race card, which she was attempting to do.”
While she admitted that her aunt’s statements were based on fact when the letter was initially written, King said her aunt would have had a change of heart if she were alive today.
“In that letter, she would be referring to some of his comments,” King says. “However, she would agree today that he, of course, ended some school segregation and he worked to prosecute members of the KKK.”
King, unprovoked, veered off into a discussion about immigration and jobs, claiming that her aunt spoke out against immigration because it would hurt Black people. “She wrote a letter saying immigration could hurt the Black job market,” King says.
