Remittance to the economy from Nigerians living abroad hit $35 billion in 2016, a top government official said Tuesday, Dec. 20.
So says Abike Dabiri-Erewa, senior special assistant to the president on foreign affairs and the diaspora, who paid a courtesy call to the chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Tunde Fowler, in Abuje. Dabiri-Erewa said she made the visit to find ways that Nigerians throughout the diaspora can receive tax incentives to encourage them to invest more locally.
“In 2016, Nigerians living abroad remitted $35 billion, higher than 2015,” she said. “This is the highest in Africa and the third largest in the world. Nigerians are excelling all over the world.”
According to data from Global Knowledge Partnership on Migration and Development, remittances into Nigeria totaled $20.8 billion in 2015.
