New York Jets Kellen Winslow Jr. has violated the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing substances, and has been suspended by the league for four games without pay.

In a statement from his publicist, Winslow apologized, taking responsibility for his actions.

“I have investigated all possible sources since learning of the positive test, including possible medical causes, but frustratingly, I do not know the source,” Winslow said in the statement. “I do not take supplements that list any banned ingredients, but the NFL policy is very strict, so I am accountable for the results.

“I sincerely apologize to my teammates, coaches and Jets fans for this situation. I will work extremely hard during this time away from the field and look forward to contributing to the team as soon as the suspension ends.”

Winslow will start his suspension immediately and will be eligible to return to the Jets’ active roster on Nov. 4, the league announced Friday.

Winslow was also listed as doubtful on the Jets’ injury report on Friday. He has been dealing with a painful right knee injury all season, missing practice all week.

Winslow is in his first year with the Jets and is the team’s leading receiver, with 17 catches.
