Tony Goldwyn is the last main ingredient to be added to the casting soup of Summit Entertainment’s Divergent movie. He’ll take on the role of Andrew Prior, father to Shailene Woodley’s teenage character, Beatrice Prior.
Aside from Woodley, Goldwyn (who plays President Fitzgerald Grant on the ABC’s Scandal) will work alongside a cast consisting of Ashley Judd, Kate Winslet, Jai Courtney, Theo James, Zoë Kravitz, Maggie Q, Mekhi Phifer, and Ansel Elgort.
Based on the Veronica Roth novel, Divergent takes place in a futuristic dystopia and centers on Woodley’s character, who is labeled a Divergent (someone who will never fit into any one group). Beatrice leaves her assigned group for another rival group, where she falls for some guy. When Beatrice discovers a plot to kill all Divergents, she searches for reasons why Divergents are considered too dangerous to live and a way to stop the massacre. Goldwyn just can’t seem to shake a scandal — can he?
Production began last week in Chicago with Neil Burger (Limitless) directing from a script by Vanessa Taylor (Game of Thrones).
Summit scheduled Divergent to hit theaters March 21, 2014.
