Following the success of End of Watch, Jake Gyllenhaal is suiting up to play a police officer again in Prisoners, an upcoming thriller with Hugh Jackman and Melissa Leo. As reported by Hitfix, Jackman stars as a Boston man who kidnaps a person he suspects to be behind the disappearance of his young daughter and her best friend, with Gyllenhaal playing a by-the-books detective who opposes Jackman’s vigilantism. Aaron Guzikowski (Contraband) wrote the original screenplay for the film. Set to be released by Warner Bros. in the fall of 2013, production is expected to begin very early next year.
French-Canadian director Denis Villeneuve, best known for the 2010 Oscar-nominated film Incendies, is helming the picture, making this film his second collaboration with Gyllenhaal. Their first film together, An Enemy, is currently in post-production and set for release in Canada sometime in 2013 (the movie has yet to secure U.S. distribution.) Based on the José Saramago novel, the thriller centers on a man who seeks out his exact look-alike after spotting him in a movie. The film also stars Sarah Gadon, Mélanie Laurent, and Isabella Rossellini.
With its release set in the fall and an Oscar-nominated director attached, Prisoners will likely receive a big awards season push from Warner Bros. But since that’s only eight-to-ten months away and cameras haven’t started rolling yet, that release date will likely change.
