President Donald Trump has found another White House renovation worth boasting about.
This time, he says his newest vanity project has the whole country talking. And if you aren’t talking, 47 has some choice words for you.
The president has repeatedly promoted his renovations as improvements that will outlast his administration. His critics, however, see another permanent monument to his taste and ego.
During a Sept. 17 event in the Rose Garden, Trump encouraged his guests to examine the project.
Trump was bragging about the new granite helipad on the White House grounds.
However, footage from his Sept. 13 return showed Marine One parked on the South Lawn’s grass instead of the expensive landing pad designed to protect that same grass.
“With patriots like you, it’ll continue for a long time,” Trump said. “So, I just want to congratulate you on your tremendous success — this tremendous success on this beautiful stone surface. There’s tremendous success, and you’ve done an incredible job.”
“We’re going to hand you a little coin. It is emblematic of your visit,” Trump continued. “Again, if you want, you can walk over, check out the new helipad.”
Trump then made it clear that reviews were neither requested nor required.
“If you don’t like it, let me know. I won’t do a damn thing about it because everybody loves it,” he declared.
“Actually, people are talking about it all over the country,” Trump continued. “It’s really taken on a whole life — the size of it, the beauty of it, the stone cutting. It’s really special.”
The awkward landing visual left critics wondering why the president’s helicopter seemingly avoided the structure he was enthusiastically promoting. Trump never addressed that detail while praising the project’s construction.
Social media users quickly supplied their own commentary, with some zeroing on his use of expletives.
“Omg he’s so right we are all talking about the new helipad. He’s so delusional,” one person wrote on X. Another said, “It’s hideous,” possibly commenting on the new eyesore in front of America’s house.
“Deranged and delusional. His legacy is corruption and destruction,” a third critic quipped.
Then came the question hanging over Trump’s sales pitch: “Then why did he land on the grass?” one observer asked.
Repeatedly, since constructing the pad, the pilots have landed in the greenery, and not on the helipad. This leaves many to wonder if it is actually ready or another rush job like many of his other vanity projects.
It seems he wants to have everything completed by Sept. 21 for his high-stakes diplomatic summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
On Threads, a few others joined the discourse.
“Really? Are people ‘all over the country’ talking about his helipad? Nobody cares except him. We care that he wastes his time and our money,” one person said.
The helipad saga began attracting backlash during the middle part of the summer when construction barriers, equipment, and torn-up turf appeared on the South Lawn. Critics accused Trump of tearing up another White House landmark for an unwanted renovation.
The administration said the pad was necessary for the new VH-92A Patriot helicopters. Their powerful downward-facing exhaust can scorch the lawn. The granite project reportedly cost between $5 million and $6 million, with Sikorsky Aircraft funding the work. Trump also suggested the surface could be used for outdoor events.
Marine One is a call sign for any Marine Corps aircraft carrying the president, according to Aerocorner. It is not one specific helicopter. The fleet includes the VH-92A Patriot, VH-3D Sea King, and VH-60N White Hawk. That distinction could explain the grass landing, but the White House has not confirmed why the new pad was not used.
In August, Trump personally signed a granite centerpiece engraved with an eagle, the presidential seal, and “Donald J. Trump 45-47 President.” Officials initially described the construction as an upgrade for “future presidents.” Trump’s permanent personal tag made that institutional sales pitch harder to swallow.
Now Trump is thrilled that his helipad has become a national conversation. It has. However, critics are still looking past the stonework, staring at the grass and waiting for an explanation.
