‘What a Disgrace’: Trump Has an Awkward Moment Beside Melania — Then Looks Around in Shock to See If Anyone Caught It

Melania Trump made another rare appearance alongside President Donald Trump.

As usual, viewers are clocking everything from their body language to their facial expressions, as proof of their courtship or lack thereof.

But one moment has many wondering whether the first lady wishes she had stayed behind to avoid one awkward moment.

Solemn occasions have not stopped Trump from drifting off into sleepland since returning to office in January 2025.

Even a special 9/11 remembrance could not keep him alert.

Former and current federal government officials gathered at the Pentagon to mark the 25th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Trump attended the ceremony in Virginia alongside First Lady Melania Trump. The president was seated directly next to his 56-year-old wife on the dais.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice delivered remarks as Trump and Melania sat on the stage.

Apparently, Hegseth and Rice honoring the lives lost on 9/11 did not keep Trump’s interest.

Embarrassing snapshots of Trump with his eyes closed rapidly circulated on social media. One snapshot showed the POTUS in a near-slumber state.

Another showed a close-eyed Trump slumped in his chair as Melania sat up straight beside him. At one point, he sat up in shock, wondering if anyone else had caught him.

As a result of the awkward pictures, the seriousness of the 9/11 gathering got overshadowed by the online attention directed at Trump’s morning nap.

“Disrespectful, disgusting. This is a somber day, and it’s rude to all who lived through 9/11 and the deceased,” one X user complained.

Another commenter wrote, “The stain is sleeping through a 9/11 memorial. Unbelievable.”

“What? He is absolutely asleep at a 9/11 ceremony. What a disgrace,” read one tweet in reaction to the president’s snoozefest.

Similarly, an outraged Trump detractor tweeted, “He fell asleep at the 9/11 Pentagon ceremony. That’s not tired. That’s disrespect.”

Trump’s shut-eye appearance at the Pentagon was not the only image that had the internet buzzing. His ankles also went viral.

Dressed in a dark suit and his signature red tie, Trump completed the outfit with black socks and black shoes. Eagle-eyed viewers zeroed in on his lower legs.

The president’s ankles seemed to be swollen to the point that the lower part of his legs looked massive in comparison to his footwear.

“Those cankles are fighting hard against those Florsheim shoes,” a Thread user pointed out. A like-minded individual exclaimed, “Check out his cankles!”

In 2025, the White House confirmed that Trump had been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency. The vascular condition can cause swelling of the lower limbs.

That CVI revelation further fueled the unease that the head of the executive branch could be dealing with other serious medical concerns.

Add in the fact that Trump has repeatedly been filmed with his eyes closed for extended periods during formal functions, and the uncertainty surrounding his fitness continues to escalate.

He was even caught taking a siesta in June while at a New York Knicks game in this year’s NBA Finals, held inside his hometown’s Madison Square Garden.

Back in July, speculation that Trump fell asleep at Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham’s funeral in the National Cathedral triggered a response from White House spokesman Davis Ingle.

“Trump was reflecting on the loss of his dear friend Lindsey Graham, for whom he had just delivered a beautiful eulogy,” Ingle stated. “Anyone suggesting otherwise is a depraved moron.”

Despite the administration insulting Trump critics who refuse to ignore multiple incidents of him slumbering on camera, months’ worth of footage thwarts those gaslighting attempts.

Trump is the oldest person ever inaugurated to the presidency. As his time in office winds down over, his health will remain a hot-button issue until he leaves the White House.

Still independent.

We hope this story was worth your time. For over 14 years, Atlanta Black Star has stayed Black-owned and independently run. We didn't get here by waiting on ad budgets that were never built to prioritize us. Our readers did that.

Corporate support for Black media has always been thin. Outlets like ours get roughly 1% of the $170 billion spent on U.S. advertising each year, and that margin is shrinking further as advertisers walk back the DEI-linked commitments they made in 2020. That's the backdrop. It's not why we're asking.

The wider picture isn't any steadier. Newspaper ad revenue has fallen more than 80% since 2005, and local newsrooms are closing at a rate of roughly two a week nationwide. When outlets go under, it's rarely the ones built to center a Black perspective from the ground up that get to stick around.

We know a request for support isn't why you came here. But without readers choosing to fund this work directly, the depth of reporting we can do at home and abroad shrinks along with everyone else's. If you're not in a position to give, that doesn't change how much we value you as a reader.

If you are able to, a recurring contribution does more for us than a single one-time gift, because it lets us plan the next investigation instead of just the next invoice. It takes about 30 seconds, no long form, no account. Thank you for continuing to support independent journalism and freedom of the press.
