A bizarre Labor Day post by President Donald Trump has enraged European allies and sparked a diplomatic firestorm.
Icelandic officials are furious with Trump after he posted a weird map showing all of North America, the Caribbean, Greenland and Iceland covered by an American flag and labeled “United States of America.”
Reuters reported that Iceland’s foreign minister, Thorgerdur Gunnarsdottir, summoned the U.S. Ambassador to Iceland to explain the meaning of it.
She told Ambassador Billy Long, who’s only been in the position a month, that Trump’s post and, by default, his message was “completely inappropriate,” according to RÚV, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service.
“The position was clearly expressed that the post was completely inappropriate,” the foreign ministry told RÚV, according to Reuters.
The president is clearly trying to ruffle feathers again, critics contend, after threatening earlier this year to annex Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, by any means necessary. That came after he retook office and immediately began referring to longtime ally and neighbor Canada as the 51st state last year.
He revived his agitation over Canada as the 51st state after trade talks fell through last month.
Denmark also weighed in on Trump’s unhinged map post.
“It’s disturbing and, in many ways, completely inappropriate,” Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen told the national broadcaster DR on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.
“It’s obviously a sign that the U.S. president still harbors some kind of maximalist vision in his own mind. We need to rein that in,” he added.
Social media erupted in outrage, calling on allies to take a tough stand and even characterizing the post as an “act of aggression.”
“I’m hoping that you and all NATO countries will take an unmovable stand against this tyrant that we SO STUPIDLY have elected and refuse to impeach! For all of our sakes!” an angry Threads user demanded.
Others chimed in.
“This post is an act of aggression.” Another applauded Iceland for calling Trump out: “Well done Iceland.”
This user said what plenty of people are thinking: “There should be consequences to stupidity.”
The Labor Day map post was one of dozens by the 80-year-old president over the holiday weekend.

On Sunday alone, in between a round of golf, he attacked political opponents and fantasized about a possible “Trump 2028” campaign. Of course that’s clearly illegal under the U.S. Constitution.
He posted so many that it was hard to keep track of.
The barrage of 43 posts in roughly six hours included one image in particular that depicted a Space Force figure in a uniform that some critics compared to the Nazis and the imperial troops from Star Wars.
His first post just after 11 a.m. featured an AI image of CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins as transgender actress Dylan Mulvaney. The post referenced a joke Trump made several weeks ago at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
A half hour later, he posted an AI-generated Bruce Springsteen cartoon before taking a break.
Later in the afternoon, he resumed firing off 14 posts in just 25 minutes. Four came within a single minute. The posts attacked late-night hosts Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, and now-former host Stephen Colbert, as well as Rosie O’Donnell, while also portraying Trump as a “Cosmic Commander” in a fake “Star Trek” poster and as the operator of an oil tanker wearing a MAGA-style cap emblazoned with FAFO, an acronym for “F— Around Find Out.”
The manic posting frenzy also included an image of Trump dropping bombs on other countries.
The president has posted thousands of posts just since the beginning of the year and more than 8,500 since retaking the White House in January of 2025.
In just the past few months, The Daily Beast reported that Trump posted 861 times in May and 681 times in June. He had already posted more than 630 times in July before Sunday’s burst.
