President Donald Trump has spent decades brushing off rumors about everything from his appearance to what really happens behind the scenes of his carefully crafted public image.
But one particular whisper has followed him almost everywhere — through television appearances, campaign rallies and even dramatic makeovers that have only given skeptics more ammunition.
Now, Trump has finally decided to address it himself.
The topic of Trump’s hair came up again during his speech at the White House Rose Garden on Sept. 2. This time, the president made it a point of conversation.
What started as a story about the MAGA leader campaigning for Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno in bad weather turned into a series of unscripted tangents about longstanding personal rumors.
“For years, I had to suffer with people saying, ‘He wears a wig.’ I don’t wear a wig,” Trump told the crowd of Republicans lawmakers and administration officials assembled for the event.
He continued, “But that night they found out I did not wear a wig because if you did, it was not going to be on your head very long. That was the worst [weather] I’ve ever seen.”
As a clip of Trump’s wig denial spread across the internet, social media users weighed in on whether the billionaire politician was being honest.
Trump getting sidetracked mid-speech led an X user to wonder, “Is he ok?” A second mocked him by writing, “Oh, that is true suffering. How did you manage to live through that?”
“Okay, okay. It’s a hairpiece, NOT a wig. But newsflash: that’s a distinction without a difference,” one person joked.
A like-minded commenter tweeted, “Translation: he wears a wig, but not always.” An additional skeptic reacted to the video of Trump’s remarks by posting, “Sure, Bro!”
“That’s the tell. When he denies something, it’s clearly true,” an observer on the platform suggested. Another Trump detractor simply declared, “Liar.”
“He has changed wigs three times in the last few weeks because people made fun of him,” read a tweet, alluding to the president’s noticeable makeover debuts at recent public outings.
The gossip about Trump possibly wearing a wig picked up steam in early August. “The Art of the Deal” author showed up in Las Vegas with a strikingly fuller head of hair.
Online critics had a field day clowning the president’s new tresses. Even the official X account for the Democratic Party pointed out Trump’s major hair transformation over a three-month period.
Nearly three weeks later, the POTUS embraced what viewers called a new “side part” while speaking at a previous Rose Garden function.
However, by the end of August, photographs were once again showing Trump with thinning hair. The quick return to his aging look ignited more whispers of him relying on a scalp rug.
Discussion surrounding Trump’s hair has long been a fixture of his political persona, tracing back to a high-profile media moment during his 2016 campaign that set off a political firestorm.
When Trump appeared as a guest on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” critics heavily criticized the host for humanizing and normalizing the controversial conservative because of a specific interaction.
“Can I mess your hair up?” Fallon asked the then-GOP candidate, to loud applause from the studio audience. Trump grimaced, but eventually played into the bit.
The former star of “The Apprentice” reality show responded, “The answer is yes, but the people in New Hampshire, where I’m going to be in about an hour, I hope they’re going to understand.”
Fallon then proceeded to tussle Trump’s hair, causing his mane to be badly disheveled as the segment ended. The two celebrities later started feuding, which included the president telling the comedian to “be a man.”
