President Donald Trump thought he had a great comeback when a reporter asked him if he was worried about being impeached if Democrats regain control of Congress in the upcoming November midterms.
What he wasn’t expecting was that Punch Bowl News’ Jake Sherman was laser focused and responded to Trump’s wild boast with a simple, yet wicked, four-word reality check that stopped the president cold.
“If Democrats do take over the House, it’s just going to be investigation mania,” Sherman said during a sit-down interview with Trump. “They’re going to do oversight. They could impeach you again. Do you think they will?”
Trump responded by saying something he’s said before, but this time he was shocked by Sherman’s pushback.
“Well, a lot of people are saying I’m one of the greatest presidents ever,” Trump replied.
But Sherman was ready and fired back, “They’re not saying that though.”
At this point in the interview, Trump’s response to the contradiction could have gone either way as most reporters know how volatile he is.
Trump chose a nervous laugh instead of a temper tantrum and tried to divert Sherman from the question.
“Yeah, but they know. They see the results,” Trump insisted.
He then touted the investments he says he has brought into the U.S. during the first 16 months of his second term.
“Look, we have right now more money being invested in the United States than at any time in history,” Trump bragged.
He claimed the investment totals exceed anything any country has ever seen.
“We’re building more factories, plants,” Trump said, before jumping to AI and auto plants. “Plants of all kinds.”
Then he made a wild statement that all the auto manufacturers are leaving Mexico, Canada, and Germany to come to the United States.
“They’re all coming here because of tariffs. Because of my very smart use of tariffs,” the president crowed.
Critics accused Trump of lying. The U.S. Senate’s Joint Economic Committee released a report in February showing between 68,000 and 108,000 manufacturing jobs were lost during Trump’s first year back in office. And the Supreme Court ruled a few months ago that a majority of Trump’s tariffs, which are essentially a tax on Americans, are illegal.
But Sherman could care less about Trump’s wild economic boats.
“But will they impeach you do you think?” he pressed.
“Ah it’s hard to believe they could,” Trump mumbled.
“They’ll be all over you,” Sherman stated. “They’ll be subpoenas,” he tried to continue but Trump interrupted.
Then he whined, “It’s a very unfair thing.”
“It’s a very unfair thing,” he repeated. “You know when I was president and made the statement a lot about Hillary Clinton, they wanted to impeach her.”
“They wanted to destroy her and I said, ‘You just can’t do that.’ And then I get in there and they tried to do the same thing with me.”
Clinton was secretary of state under former President Barack Obama.
The former first lady received glowing reviews in the role and worked hard during her four years in office from January 2009 to February 2013, traveling to as many as 116 countries representing the U.S.
However, hardline Republicans in Congress went after her for years over Libyan militants’ 2012 attack on an American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, that resulted in the deaths of Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.
Social media exploded, calling out Trump for his gaslighting and evasive answer.
“Who is this ‘a lot of people’ he’s talking about because they’re not real.”
“He is most certainly not one of the greatest presidents ever. More like one of the worst. Probably the worst,” an X user proclaimed.
This X user chimed in, “You know, Trump may actually believe that. Because in his little bubble he only surrounds himself will suck ups and Yes Men.”
“Trump has lost his mind. It’s obvious to EVERYONE but the Republicans in Congress,” a poster pointed out.
Others agreed, “His elderly delusions of grandeur are so exhausting.”
