‘Look at Him Standing There!’: Older White Woman Went from Screaming to Stalking at the Sight of a Black Resident In a Tony Manhattan Apartment Building

A New Yorker’s day was almost ruined before he even left his Manhattan apartment building.

A bizarre episode in which a dog-walking Karen screamed at the sight of a Black man in her Upper West Side building is going viral.

The ugly encounter continued outside, where the white woman and her dog followed the man down the street. According to the caption on the Aug. 4 video, the unnamed Black man believed he was being stalked and called the police.

The woman and the man encountered each other as she stepped out of the elevator into the building’s lobby. Upon seeing him standing there, presumably waiting for the elevator, she went from breathlessly begging “please, please,” as though he were about to hurt her, to banshee-level screaming.

Both had small dogs on leashes, and even the man’s pup seemed wary, protectively standing in front of him as she launched into a scream fest. “He’s not moving!” she yelled, “Look at him standing there, doing nothing! What about the elevator? Get on the f*cking elevator!”

“Look, I live here too. I have all the rights you do,” he responded. “I’m protected by the state of New York, just like you are.”

She barked, “No, you don’t.”

Unfortunately, the harassment apparently continued outside. Later, the man left the building with a woman. On their way to a nearby coffee shop, they spotted the angry neighbor standing silently near a tree with her dog, camera phone out, filming. The woman, who was now wearing a white shirt, gray capri pants, and flip-flops, trailed the couple all the way down the street.

As he put in the video’s caption: “She literally starts to follow us yet she’s ‘petrified.’”

The video then shows the woman passing by the café where they were, giving them a hard stare from the street as they sipped their drinks. The man claimed the woman eventually stationed herself at a window table in a restaurant directly across the street, and continued to record them from afar.

Though the man called police, it’s unclear if he pressed charges. In the meantime, he’s got quite the neighbor, but at least the dogs seem to get along.
