‘I Was Too Focused on the Acting and Soundtrack’: TikToker Points Out Continuity Error In ‘Waiting to Exhale’ Scene, But Fans Quickly Come to Movie’s Defense

TikTok investigators strike again after spotting a huge continuity error in the cult classic romance-drama “Waiting To Exhale.” The incident has since gone viral after many platform users admitted to seeing the editing mistake only now.

The scene in question involves single mother and beauty salon owner Gloria Matthews played by legendary actress Loretta Devine, who is spotted talking with her ex-husband,  David Matthews, portrayed by Primetime Emmy-nominated actor Giancarlo Esposito.

During the pair’s conversation, Gloria’s earrings appear, disappear and reappear once more. While executives might not have caught the error before the movie’s release in 1995, TikTok content creator @IAmKristin claimed she initially saw it when she viewed the film when she was younger and decided to bring the scene to fans’ attention last week.

Viewers were stunned, many admitting they’d watched the award-winning movie without ever noticing the vanishing act, including one platform user who wrote, “I’ve seen that movie 1,000× and never caught that.” Another person shared, “As much as I love this movie and know it from word to word….I can truly say that I’ve never ever in my whole 34 years notice that lol. thank you.”

“We never noticed because you got this deep in the movie, you didn’t care about earrings cause it’s a good movie,” added a third person. “This was my pinnacle movie in my 20s. Never noticed. I don’t notice sheitt like this ever. lol. I was too focused on the acting and soundtrack!.”

Still, many people were quick to come to the Forest Whitaker-directed movie’s defense, with many stating they were too engulfed in the film to realize the earrings went missing. “I think people who notice things like this don’t pay attention to the actual movie and what matters my fiancé does this,” wrote one critic. Another commented, “WE DIDN’T NOTICE BECAUSE IT WAS A DAMN GOOD MOVIE.”

@IAmKristin  defended her highlight and found support from a fellow enthusiast who wrote, “As soon as I saw him. I knew you were gonna talk about her earrings,” before adding, “once u watch something over and over. You notice everything.” @IAmKristin replied, “Exactly, this isn’t something I noticed the first time I watched it.”

Devine ultimately earned an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture and currently stars on STARZ’s hit television show “P Valley.” Esposito recently wrapped up AMC’s critically acclaimed drama series “Better Call Saul.”
