‘Why Does Me Having a Show Mean Anything Against Her’: Kandi Burruss Reflects on Nene Leakes Calling Her a ‘Coon’ and The Star Being Jealous of Her Her Relationship with Bravo

Kandi Burruss revealed during her recent appearance on TMZ’s “It’s Tricky” podcast how her former “Real Housewives of Atlanta” co-star Nene Leakes allegedly called her a derogatory term that implies she’s a sellout.

In the March 17 interview, Burruss also claimed that Leakes reportedly expressed jealousy towards her relationship with the Bravo network. Burruss, who is currently starring in her spinoff series “Kandi and the Gang,” told host Raquel Harper where the pair’s current relationship stands.

When Harper asked if she had spoken to Leakes at all, Burruss quickly responded “no.” As Harper clarified that she asked the question to see if Leakes sent Burruss a congratulatory message for her new show, the Xscape singer claimed Leakes did the exact opposite. She said, “If anything, it is the exact opposite. I don’t understand what be going on with Nene for real.”

When Harper pressed Burruss about what caused the tension between the two women, she stated, “I don’t know what her problem is with me. You know, like seriously I’ve seen her say all kinds of stuff. She called me, this right here pissed me the f–k off… She said somewhere called me a coon. That right there was when I was like, ‘OK.’”

As the interview continued, the 45-year-old said following the slur incident that she never made an effort to contact Leakes to address the issue because she felt it would be a waste of time.

“We don’t communicate, and those are the type of things you put out in the atmosphere. Why do I need to waste my time talking to you anymore? That’s just how I feel about it.” When asked by Harper if Leakes’ negative response stemmed from a personal vendetta between both women, Burruss said she didn’t do anything to her former cast mate.

Burruss explained while mentioning Leakes’ past feud with Bravo, which ultimately led to the star asking her fans to boycott the network, “I didn’t do nothing to her, and that’s the crazy thing. I think she was having her own issues with the network right and that was very public or whatever. But I don’t know if because I have a better relationship with them she had negative things to say about me, took that negative energy towards me.”

Towards the end of the clip, Burruss addressed Leakes’ fan base and their statements that suggested she stole a spinoff opportunity from the former reality star.

She said, “I see things that her fans say — they act as if I stopped her opportunity or something. … I see them say stuff like me having a show like that should have been her show. Why does me having a show mean anything against her? She can still have her own thing and I have my own thing.”

Burruss closed the interview by saying that she only talked about this issue because she found the situation annoying, especially when being called, in effect, an Uncle Tom.

She said, “So I don’t know why her and her peoples be coming at me with all that mess. I normally don’t address it like realistically I think this is the only time publicly I’ve even talked about that but its annoying. Its annoying as f–k. Especially when you say things like using the coon term towards me cause if nothing else realistically I’m the only one out of them that still lives in a majority-Black community.”

This interview comes a week after Leakes threw shade on Twitter toward Burruss’ spinoff series.
