Tyler Perry Celebrates New ‘Madea’ Milestone and Calls Out People Who Say Black Movies Don’t Do Well Globally

Tyler Perry has done it again with his latest film, “A Madea Homecoming,” which premiered on Feb. 25. The multi-hyphenate, who stars in, directed, and wrote the film, brought his beloved character Mabel “Madea” Simmons out of retirement. The Netflix project marks the triumphant return of Perry’s most famous character and follows 2019’s “A Madea Family Funeral.”

In a celebratory post on Wednesday, March 2, Perry reflected on the success of “A Madea Homecoming,” which was watched for over 31.5 million hours during the week of Feb. 21- Feb. 27. It ranked as the #1 film in America over Netflix’s “The Tinder Swindler” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”

The 52-year-old wrote, “WOW!!!!! Since the beginning of my career, I was always told that ‘black movies’ don’t do well in other countries. I want to say, ‘thank you’ to not only my ride or dies in the USA, but to all of you in the rest of the world that helped Hollywood see what I’ve always known!”

He continued, “Movies with Black people in them can appeal to the entire globe. Thank you, thank you, thank you. THANK YOU, NETFLIX!”

“A Madea Homecoming” also landed top 10 in 33 countries, including the U.S., Ireland, and #1 in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Martinique, Dominican Republic, Panama, Guadeloupe, and at least four countries in Africa.

In the film, Madea’s family gathers together to celebrate her great-grandson’s college graduation. And per usual, the family matriarch keeps her purse locked and loaded to handle any drama or surprise guests.

Audiences have enjoyed Madea’s raw and unfiltered jokes and her endearing personality since Perry’s feature debut in 2005’s “Diary of a Mad Black Woman.” The film was adapted from his famous stage play of the same title.

In the comments of Perry’s post, fans shared their opinions about “A Madea Homecoming.” Here’s what a few had to say:

“That’s right! Black is global.”

“PLS MAKE MORE! We want to see more movies, maybe a tv show, pls don’t stop. @tylerperry.”
