‘I Just Wanted to be F—able’: Da Brat Opens Up About When She Took on a Sexier Look to Sell Records

Rapper Da Brat is best known for her successful music career and her signature tomboy look. However, there was a time where she ditched the baggy clothes for a sexier look.

During a Feb. 1 appearance on daytime talk show “Tamron Hall,” the 46-year-old rapper took some time to talk about her career and when and why she changed her look.

Hall asked the MC if she ever felt pressured to make the image change, to which the rapper said, “Absolutely not.” “It had nothing to do with it,” she explained.

She continued, “I would not let anybody change me or put me in anything tight or anything ’til I felt it was safe or I felt like it. Now I did make most of my own decisions, really the majority of them — when it came to dressing. JD [Jermaine Dupri] never tried to change me. I stayed with my pants to the back and my big clothes for as long as I wanted to, and when I felt like, ‘Oh, all these girls giving body, let me show I got something to work with too.’ So that’s what that was all about.”

The “What’chu Like” emcee shared that her dressing up in more form-fitting clothing was more of a business move. “I just wanted to be f—able, and that is what had to happen to sell records, which is what I was told,” Da Brat explained.

Da Brat, whose real name is Shawntae Harris, went public with her relationship with entrepreneur Jesseca Dupart in March 2020. The news was revealed when the Kaleidoscope Hair products CEO shared a post on Instagram of the rapper with the caption “❣️ yep …..,” seemingly solidifying their status.
