Gayle King’s daughter Kirby Bumpus recently benefited from her mom’s prominent circle of friends when she got the rare opportunity to tie the knot at Oprah Winfrey’s house.
“Kirby really is so happy, and nothing beats when your children are happy,” King told Oprah Magazine of her daughter’s marriage to husband Virgil Miller.
The broadcast journalist revealed that they weren’t sure how they would celebrate the special occasion, given the restrictions put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Winfrey, who also happens to be Bumpus’ godmother, came to the rescue and opened up her $6.85 million home in Santa Barbara, California, for the event.
The ceremony was intimate, with only six guests including the iconic talk show host, her partner Stedman Graham, King, and her son Will, who officiated the nuptials.
Speaking on the occasion, King expressed that “nobody knows Kirby the way her brother does, so for him to do the ceremony felt meant to be.” She added, “My son Will says ‘We call ourselves a tripod, and that day with Virgil, we became a perfect square.’”
Bumpus finally gave her mother permission to share the news, as so King revealed in her Instagram post she uploaded on Monday, February 1.
“FINALLY fav daughter @kirbybump gave me permission to share the news she’s a married lady.. she & Virgil Miller tied the knot in super small service(6 people) @oprah house in December,” she wrote in the lengthy caption.
King explained that there were “strict COVID rules” put in place on the day of the ceremony. So strict that she couldn’t even give her daughter a hug, which the reporter said “was haaaaard.”
She continued, “Not the wedding we planned in 2020 but my favorite son @willgb3 performed the ceremony… the day was gorgeous and so was kirby! I call that perfection..” King ended her caption jokingly stating that she was “all ears and taking notes” on how to be a good mother-in-law.
Bumpus and Miller got engaged in February 2019. At the time King announced the news with a heartwarming Instagram post featuring photos of her and Will surprising her daughter and several snaps of the betrothed pair.
“Guess what happened to @fav daughter … yep @kirbybump is ENGAGED!” King captioned the gallery of photos. She added, “Swipe left to see the (very) lucky guy ..welcome to the family VIRGIL MILLER! She thought will and I were in la.”
