R&B songstress Keke Wyatt is opening up about her family’s terrifying year after learning that her son Rahjah had cancer.
In a 23-minute video uploaded to the “Nothing in This World” singer’s YouTube page, she and the now 18 year old reflected on the moment they realized something was off about his health and the journey he embarked on to becoming cancer-free.
Filmed during a doctor’s visit at a Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta-Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, the mother of 10 revealed that she first knew something was wrong with Rahjah during a family trip to an amusement park.
“I knew it was a horrible problem when we went to Six Flags, and you literally sat in one spot at the park and was like ‘Mom, I literally cannot move,’ ” Wyatt recalled. “I was like, ‘what?’ ” Her son got so sick that day that he had to get a piggyback ride out of the park. “I was dying. I was literally dying and didn’t know,” Rahjah explained.
The two recalled how then the young boy’s health kept getting worse shortly after. “I was tired and fatigued. I couldn’t do nothing,” Wyatt’s son said. He added, “I wasn’t eating.”
The 38 year old said, “For a mother and a doctor, watching a teenage boy, 13 years old, don’t wanna eat nothin? That’s in question.” She told her son, “You dropped weight drastically.”
Soon after being tested, Rahjah was diagnosed with leukemia. In 2017, Wyatt shared the sad news with her fans on Instagram. “Plz pray for my family… Haven’t really said to much about my personal life, But my child has been fighting cancer and lost all of their hair that they loved,” the mother captioned a video clip announcing that she would be shaving off all of her hair in support of her son who, at that point, had lost his hair. She added, “It hurts me so bad.”
Wyatt remembered getting the shocking phone call at 12 in the morning, requesting that she immediately come to the hospital.
“I said, ‘What is it? Like cancer or something?’ ” Wyatt said she asked the doctor. She continued, “And she said, ‘Yes.’ Honey, my butthole fell on the floor. My throat hit my butt, and my butt hit the floor. I couldn’t believe it.”
The family would go on to experience even scarier moments like the time Rahjah had a seizure, and his brain swelled up. Wyatt expressed that “If there was ever a time in my life where I would lose my mind, that would be the day.”
Although he continues to deal with the after effects of his illness, which consist of headaches and periods of exhaustion, the family is thrilled to announce that he has been cancer-free since November 2018.
