Rap star Cardi B has filed for divorce from rapper Offset after three years of marriage. The “Bodak Yellow” star filed for divorce at an Atlanta courthouse on Tuesday, Sept. 15, according to multiple reports.
The former “Love and Hip Hop: New York” star claimed that the marriage was “irretrievably broken” and “there are no prospects for a reconciliation” after she reportedly found out that Offset had been unfaithful yet again, PEOPLE confirmed.
According to court documents obtained by XXL from the Superior Court of Fulton County State of Georgia Family Division the 27 year old, whose real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, is also requesting full custody of their 2-year-old daughter Kulture Kiari Cephus.
The documents state that Cardi, who is listed as the petitioner, “is a fit and proper person to have legal custody of the minor child with final decision-making authority over legal custody matters and to have primary physical custody of the minor child.” It continues, “Petitioner asks that the Court grant such custodial arrangement on a temporary and permanent basis.” Additionally, Cardi is also seeking child support for their daughter and maintenance on a temporary and permanent basis. There’s no word on the total amount of financial aid the rapper is seeking. However, she requested that Offset pay for her legal expenses according to the documents.
Cardi and Offset secretly tied the knot on Sept. 20. 2017, yet their relationship had been troubled by cheating accusations. Just three months after getting married, Cardi confirmed that Offset had been the focus of a sex tape cheating scandal after rumors of a video and alleged affair with another woman surfaced in December 2017.
At the time, Cardi addressed the incident in a since-deleted tweet, writing, “No, it’s not right for a [n—a] to cheat…But what you want me to do?” She added, “Go f–k me another n—a? Start all over again and get cheated on again? This sh-t happens to everyone and I be too, you too…People handle they relationship different soo.” The rapper asked her followers to respect her privacy and whatever decision she came to. “I’m going to make a decision in my own times with my heart and mind,” she wrote according to multiple outlets. “I don’t need to be rushed or be told what to do. Its my life! I belong to me not to the world.”
Fans took to social media to express their thoughts over the shocking news, including one Twitter user who wrote, “I’m not surprised cardi B is divorceing offset. She’s sitting with presidential candidates & looking to make change,” They added, “He’s been cheating on her since day one. She just outgrew him.” Another person tweeted, “Cardi B can get another Offset but Offset can’t get another Cardi B. I’d be sick about that.”
A third user applauded Cardi for leaving Offset and encouraged other women in similar situations to do the same, even if that meant being in a less-than-ideal position in life. “Ladies, may we ALL strive to not keep forgiving cheaters & giving them chance after chance no matter how sorry they say they are & no matter how much they say they miss you. Even if it means you’ll be a single mother—your child/ren deserve to see a healthy relationship. #CardiB,” they wrote alongside a screengrab reporting that Offset apparently said “I miss Cardi” following the rapper’s divorce announcement.
The couple’s divorce comes less than a week after what would’ve been their third anniversary. As of now, neither Cardi nor Offset have publicly addressed the filing.
