When Sept. 6 rolls around in a month or so, many will be celebrating at least two events: Labor Day weekend and the premiere of “Power Book II: Ghost,” the new “Power” spinoff on Starz.
Executive producer of both shows 50 Cent released a trailer for “Power Book II: Ghost” on Tuesday, Aug. 4, much to people’s surprise and excitement.
“The legacy lives on,” 50 captioned the trailer, which focuses a lot on “Power” character Tariq St. Patrick, played by Michael Rainey Jr.
Tariq’s mother, Tasha St. Patrick, played by Naturi Naughton, is also in the trailer and is depicted as in prison for the murder of her husband James “Ghost” St. Patrick. Tasha took the fall for killing Ghost in the “Power” series finale, but Tariq is the one who pulled the trigger.
The young criminal seems to remain in the underworld for the new series, but this time he becomes a college drug dealer during his freshman year on campus. Additionally, he has to deal with the consequences of his past while trying to help his mother with her legal problems.
Last year it was announced that Mary J. Blige was cast on the show, and she too makes an appearance in the trailer. Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man, who plays an attorney hired by Tariq to help his mother, is also a cast member and seen in the trailer.
“Oya 🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️ this is what I’m talking about 👏👏👏,” wrote one of 50’s followers when he released the clip.
“Wow, can’t wait,” another person commented.
Courtney A. Kemp, creator of “Power” and “Power Book II: Ghost,” said the new show will be action-packed and won’t give viewers a chance to even catch their breath.
“‘Power Book II: Ghost’ hits the ground running, throwing fans right back into the action up just 72 hours after the events of Power 615,” she said in a statement. “What I can promise is that once the ride begins, we don’t slow down.”
Kemp will executive produce “Power Book II: Ghost” via her End of Episode production company, and 50 will executive produce it through his G-Unit Film and Television.
