Buju Banton is one of the latest artists to join Jay-Z‘s Roc Nation management, and to celebrate the reggae legend dropped a new video on Friday to “Steppa,” a song where he plays peacemaker to gang members.
It’s been almost a year since Banton was released from Georgia’s McRae Correctional Facility after being convicted in 2011 of conspiracy to possess cocaine with intent to distribute and illegal possession of a firearm.
A 10-year sentence followed, but it was later reduced to seven years after a judge tossed the illegal gun conviction.
Banton’s first concert since being released from prison came in March at the sold-out National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. Plus, he went on the “Long Walk to Freedom” tour since being out and dropped singles like “False Pretense,” “Trust,” “Country for Sale” and “Bagga Mouth.”
On Saturday, the Kingston-born artist shared news of the Roc Nation deal to his Instagram page and wrote “FELLOWSHIP 🙏🏿 @rrpenriceCNATION @ISLANDRECDS |#STEPPA 👣.”
People left all kinds of comments underneath and told Banton the deal was “Massive,” “Wicked,” “Awesome” and a “Brilliant Move.”
“KEEP WINNING BUJU!!!! another Instagram follower wrote.
“Up move my general,” wrote someone else.
And another person told Banton that you “Can’t hold a good man down.”
As for Roc Nation, it was founded in 2008, and it’s subdivision Roc Nation Sports was launched by Jay-Z in 2013.
On the sports side, the company reps people like retired boxing champion Andre Ward, former New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia, who recently announced his retirement, and the Los Angeles Lakers’ Danny Green.
And on the artist end, Roc Nation handles management duties for folks like Big Sean, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Jaden Smith, Meek Mill and Rihanna.
