Issa Rae is known to bust out a rap on her show “Insecure,” but she’s always maintained she’s not a rapper in real life. However, she can now sign her own talent, thanks to her newly launched record label, Raedio.
The actress announced that she’d established the company on her Instagram page Friday by announcing new music from her first signee, TeaMarrr.
“Beyond excited to present the first amazingly talented artist from my new label RAEDIO, TeaMarrr (@imaliltcup)! Check out her song and video, ‘Kinda Love’ on all streaming platforms now! (@theraedio),” read Rae’s Instagram caption that accompanied a teaser for the singer-rapper’s music video in which she literally builds a man.
Rae signed TeaMarrr as her label’s flagship artist after her attention-grabbing video for her 2018 single “One Job” caught the Emmy-nominee’s eye, according to Variety.
“Music has always been an essential part of every project I do and working with emerging talent is a personal passion,” said Rae, who has employed music by SZA and Jazmine Sullivan, among others, on “Insecure,” said in a statement. “Raedio allows me to continue that work within the music industry and audio entertainment space. The Atlantic Records team are innovators in terms of shifting and shaping culture. I’m excited to join forces with them to discover new artists.”
The burgeoning label was formed earlier this year in partnership with Atlantic Records. It touts itself as an “audio everywhere company” and also serves as a platform that pairs acts with efforts in film, television, podcasts and commercials among others.
Additionally, the label also provides music supervision services for HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show.” Headed by Rae’s longtime business development executive and now president, Benoni Tagoe, Raedio seeks to reset the music industry model for the new set of artists to come.
