Peacemaker and “The View” moderator Whoopi Goldberg defused a potentially volatile situation this week after co-host Meghan McCain seemingly took offense to be laughed at.
The daytime talk show hosts were discussing progressive versus moderate candidates at Tuesday’s Democratic debate in Westerville, Ohio, where all 12 presidential hopefuls took the stage. Among them was South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who has ruffled feathers with his recent criticisms of policies pushed by opponents Sen. Elizabeth Warren and former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke.
McCain, one of the show’s resident conservatives, said Buttigieg was once among her favorites but lost her support after veering “severely, severely left” and deviating from his usually moderate policies.
“He’s also trying to re-moderate himself,” she said, adding, “he’s done some real damage.”
The co-host then invited Buttigieg to return to the talk show, because she had “some serious questions about the policies he’s put out.”
“When he first came on the show, I loved him, and now I’m kind of done with the far left … whatever,” McCain added.
She put a hard stop to her point, however after noticing Goldberg was chuckling, to which she asked, “Why are you laughing at me?”
Goldberg, trying to regain her composure, explained she was laughing “because for me it’s like —”
“It’s not like it’s just my opinion,” McCain cut in, appearing ready to launch into one of her typical on-air tantrums.
“For me, it’s like a marriage,” Goldberg continued, quickly lightening the mood.
A smile creeps on McCain’s face and she agrees, “It is like a marriage, and I’m done and I walk out!”
The co-hosts continue yukking it up before Goldberg throws the show to commercial. But as she does, McCain comments that she “literally doesn’t know anything except this,” to which Whoopi replies, “That’s right!”
Viewers quickly took notice.
“I swore I just heard Meghan say: Clearly I don’t know anything. And I thought Whoopie pointed at her, and said: That’s right! 😮,” one fan wrote.
“Ohhhh Whoopie with that shade at the end! YESSS!” another chimed in.
