A 9-month-old baby was hit in the face when a white man threw eggs at the infant and the child’s mother in what police believe to be a racially motivated assault in England.
A woman was crossing the road with her baby in a stroller when someone threw the eggs at them from a vehicle near Shrub Hill Retail Park in Worcester, BBC News reported.
The mother and child, whose face was red, didn’t sustain injuries in the attack, West Mercia Police told The Independent.
“This was a nasty and unprovoked assault on a mother and her baby that has left the victims understandably shaken,” Sgt. Paul Smith told the British news site. “We’re particularly concerned that the motivation for this is believed to be racial — there is no excuse for this type of behavior and we will not tolerate it.”
The race of the victims has not been released yet, but the mother is reportedly in her 30s.
Smith added that no arrests have been made but the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities are also reviewing CCTV footage to identify the vehicle involved, police told media outlets.
“We realize this incident will cause concern amongst the community and want to reassure the public that we take reports of this nature very seriously and will continue to patrol the area,” Smith said told The Independent. “I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or saw anything suspicious in the area at the time of the incident to please get in touch.”
Police data for 2017-18 showed that babies and toddlers were among the victims of more than 10,500 crimes, The Independent reported.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Crimestoppers at 0800-555-111.
