It seems like securing the main cast for “Coming 2 America” is just about complete now that Shari Headley, who played Lisa McDowell in the original, has signed on to reprise her role.
Headley, of course, was a central part of the “Coming to America” storyline, since Eddie Murphy‘s character Prince Akeem set off to find love in the United States and married her character.
The announcement of Headley joining the highly anticipated film comes shortly after Wesley Snipes signed on, as well as Leslie Jones and Rick Ross.
Besides Murphy, Arsenio Hall will be among the original cast members to join the sequel, along with John Amos, James Earl Jones and Paul Bates, who played Oha.
In the sequel Akeem, who’s about to be king of Zamunda, heads back to the States after learning he has a street-savvy son in New York named Lavelle.
At the wish of his father played by Jones, Murphy tries to groom his son to be the next prince of Zamunda, and Hall’s character joins him.
Murphy will be a producer of the sequel, as will “black-ish” creator Kenya Barris.
Headley — who used to be married to Chris “Play” Martin’ from the ’80s rap group Kid ‘n Play — hasn’t posted news about the sequel yet. In fact, she’s been relatively quiet on Instagram and Twitter since this spring.
But the 55-year-old has been busy on the acting front since 1988’s “Coming to America” and has played in soap operas “All My Children,” “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “Guiding Light” and “The Haves and the Have Nots.”
She’s also appeared in the film “Johnson Family Vacation,” “Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween” and will be one of the stars in the new Showtime series “On Becoming a God in Central Florida.”
