“We were married almost nine years, and I think life changes really got the best of both of us at times,” said Monica in the interview, which was published on Friday. “I take accountability for what my part is. Divorce has not been easy.”
“Everywhere I go, it’s the first thing that comes up,” she added. “One thing about me is, I’m gonna respect him to the death, though. Because he didn’t do anything. … I don’t hate him. … I think there’s a difference when you walk away from something and you real mad.”
Monica said Brown will always be someone she loves and she doesn’t understand why other couples who break up talk bad about each other after they’ve shared so much.
She then explained how difficult the breakup has been on all her children, not just the child she has with Shannon Brown, because it’s been a huge change for everyone.
Monica and her ex have a 5-year-old daughter named Laiyah Brown, and she has two sons, Rocko and Romelo, with the rapper Rocko.
The 38-year-old also talked about how her kids have been affected by the split on “Sway in the Morning.”
“The kids are definitely impacted, even more than us, ’cause we know what’s taking place sometimes, when they don’t,” she said during the discussion that was also posted on Friday. “In their minds, they’re always trying to figure it out. They’re always trying to figure out what happened, why and what the changes may be.”
“So for us, my main focus was to make sure that they were OK,” the singer continued. “Making sure they know what’s going on. Not the crazy details that are for adults only, but things that will help them sift through whatever they may read.”
Plus, Monica said she makes it clear to her children that they didn’t cause the split, and “If anything, they made a lot of bad situations better.”
