Naomi Campbell or Jennifer Lopez: Who Wore This Daring Valentino Sequined Cape the Best?

Supermodel Naomi Campbell was recently photographed in a sequined cape that Jennifer Lopez wore for a magazine spread last year. As such, another round of fashion face-off ensues.

The item in question is a green sequin Maison Valentino Haute Couture cape, which is part of the fall/winter 2018 collection.

Campbell was snapped in the statement piece by Dutch fashion photographer duo Inez and Vinoodh, who directed Rihanna in her video with Paul McCartney and Kanye West, “FourFiveSeconds.”

“#BTS ♥️ #ValentinoPreFall19 photographed in the NYC subways by @inezandvinoodh under the creative direction of @pppiccioli & styled by #JoeMckenna,” the star captioned the photograph, which contrasts her high fashion look with the everyday views of the subway.

While Campbell wore the cape from an older collection, this shoot, styled by Joe McKenna, was focused on the VRing bag for the Valentino pre-fall 2019 accessories campaign.

The model’s look follows Lopez’s whose images in the cape were featured in the December 2018 issue of InStyle magazine.

Lopez posed in the cape and nothing else aside from gold-colored platform high heels.

When the look debuted, articles lit up the interwebs comparing it to the famous green Versace dress with a plunging neckline that the performer wore to the 2000 Grammy Awards.

“In my family, curves were glorified and part of the culture,” Jennifer said to the fashion publication of exposing her figure. “It was just like, ‘Jennifer has a big butt, and it’s good.'”

As for the woman who wore the glitz and glam look the best, Instagram users shared their take. Many gave it to Campbell.

“Clearly Naomi c’mon!”

“Well if we’re going to be honest, JLO is not really wearing it 😁”

“Naomi hand up hands down no compo 🔥🔥🔥”

“It’s 2 different looks. One is for a photo shoot of course it’s not photographed to be ‘wearable’ its being showcased for a sexy shoot. Naomi wears it in a classy way. I like both for what they’re worn for.”

“Welllll…. Jennifer hasn’t gotten it on yet… sooooo 😗Naomi.”

Still independent.

We hope this story was worth your time. For over 14 years, Atlanta Black Star has stayed Black-owned and independently run. We didn't get here by waiting on ad budgets that were never built to prioritize us. Our readers did that.

Corporate support for Black media has always been thin. Outlets like ours get roughly 1% of the $170 billion spent on U.S. advertising each year, and that margin is shrinking further as advertisers walk back the DEI-linked commitments they made in 2020. That's the backdrop. It's not why we're asking.

The wider picture isn't any steadier. Newspaper ad revenue has fallen more than 80% since 2005, and local newsrooms are closing at a rate of roughly two a week nationwide. When outlets go under, it's rarely the ones built to center a Black perspective from the ground up that get to stick around.

We know a request for support isn't why you came here. But without readers choosing to fund this work directly, the depth of reporting we can do at home and abroad shrinks along with everyone else's. If you're not in a position to give, that doesn't change how much we value you as a reader.

If you are able to, a recurring contribution does more for us than a single one-time gift, because it lets us plan the next investigation instead of just the next invoice. It takes about 30 seconds, no long form, no account. Thank you for continuing to support independent journalism and freedom of the press.
