Fans Delighted at Gabrielle Union’s ‘Shady Baby’ Girl Finally Smiling, Some Want Her Typically Mean Looks Back

Gabrielle Union’s little girl is known as a “Shady Baby” online, but a new video of the infant sees little Kaavia James Union Wade breaking into a smile.

The 4-month-old daughter of Union and her Miami Heat guard husband Dwyane Wade couldn’t help but grin as she sat in a “Finding Nemo” themed bouncer. Union set the short clip to Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” Kaavia James raised her arms above her head and showed off her gummy grin as she bobbed in her play walker.

“Don’t Worry. Be Happy. A little joy for the timeline 👼🏾” the baby’s famous mom captioned the March 5 clip.

Several fans marveled at the fact that Kaavia James, who has been deemed the “Shady Baby” by her mom and dad who run her Instagram account, actually smiled on camera.

“Oh she smiles? 🙄”

“I’m finally seeing the Shady Baby, smile😍”

“We finally get a little smile! 😍😍😍😍”

“Wait.. is that half a smile?! Shady baby does smile 💙💙 😍 Hahaa @gabunion.”

“OMG!!! Finally a smile!!!! She’s adorable!!!”

However, some have taken to Kaavia James’ adorably shady looks and wanted to see more of it.

“She’s so pretty when she smiles but I just love her shady baby faces 😍”

“No the brand is Shady Baby! Stay on brand, no smiles! 😆”

“Shady Baby is #mood!!!”

After Kaavia James was born via surrogate in November, her parent-run Instagram page has taken off with her “Shady Baby” antics.

The youngster is never afraid to throw shade at her NBA star dad — even on his birthday.

“Happy 37th Birthday to my Daddy!! Those new teeth are the real MVP #shadybaby,” read the caption of a photo of Kaavia James and Wade, who showed off his recent dental work.

Another photo saw Kaavia James looking quite unamused about having to actually swim at a pool party.

“She said we weren’t gonna swim at the swim party. She said nobody actually ever swims at swim parties 😒 SABOTAGED! #shadybaby 👶🏾”

Union discussed the hit page with People magazine a month ago and said the inspiration stemmed from Kaavia James having a good blend of her parents’ traits.

“She looks just like Dad, but I’d like to think the attitude is from me,” the actress explained. “She will stare into your soul and tell you about yourself through her eyes.”

Democracy needs journalism it can trust.

This election season, the stakes are higher than usual — and so is the pressure on newsrooms to soften their coverage, stay quiet, or just disappear. Independent reporting, the kind that answers to readers instead of advertisers or political pressure, matters more in a moment like this, not less.

For over 14 years, Atlanta Black Star has stayed independent and reader-funded. We have no corporate owner and no shareholders telling us what to cover or how to cover it. That independence is also our biggest vulnerability: nothing protects it except readers choosing to fund it directly.

Newspaper ad revenue has fallen more than 80% since 2005, and local newsrooms are closing at a rate of roughly two a week nationwide. When outlets go under in a moment like this, it's rarely the independent, reader-funded ones that get to stick around.

We know a request for support isn't why you came here. But without readers choosing to fund this work directly, the depth of reporting we can do at home and abroad shrinks along with everyone else's. If you're not in a position to give, that doesn't change how much we value you as a reader.

If you are able to, a recurring contribution does more for us than a single one-time gift, because it lets us plan the next investigation instead of just the next invoice. It takes about 30 seconds, no long form, no account. Thank you for continuing to support independent journalism and freedom of the press.
