Steve Harvey marked his fourth year as host of the annual Miss Universe pageant on Sunday and three years after he infamously mixed up the winning contestants, a current hopeful took a playful dig at him.
During the competition Natalia Carvajal a.k.a. Miss Costa Rica, who hosts a TV show in her country, was asked if she had any tips for Harvey. She took the chance to make a joke about Harvey’s fateful screw-up.
Back in 2015, Harvey mistakenly crowned Miss Colombia the winner of the pageant when it was Miss Philippines who was the true Miss Universe listed on the card.
“Well, I think you’re doing good. The outfit is fine, the smile is great,” Carvajal begins during the Dec. 16 competition broadcasted live from Bangkok, Thailand. “But I have to give you one advice. Just for the future, just in case. Come closer because I don’t want everyone to hear.
“If they ever give you a really, really, really important envelope, try to read carefully, OK?” Carvajal, who had just entered the top 20, said to resounding laughter from the audience.
As a comedian, the host took the jab in stride saying “When you make a mistake, get up and keep going. I’m still here, baby. I love you. Thank you, Costa Rica!”
Viewers ate up the joke.
“Costa Rica is Savage af😂😂😂”
“Costa Rica is so funny.😂”
“I love u Miss Costa Rica haha.”
“@MissUniverse #MissUniverse @IAmSteveHarvey and that folks from Costa Rica, is the joke of the year for 2018. I love You Costa Rica, I love you too Steve! 🥂🎉🍻 ❤️ from 🇵🇭”
“Lol, she’s so brave🤣🤣.”
And that’s not the first time a Miss Universe contestant has made fun of Harvey’s gaffe. In 2016, Pia Wurtzbach, who won the 2015 title, handed Harvey a pair of glasses before he read the winner of that year’s pageant.
Carvajal’s joke may have won over audiences but she didn’t win the title in the 2018 competition. The crown went to Miss Philippines Catriona Gray.
Still laughing at Miss Universe Costa Rica’s advice for @IAmSteveHarvey. 🤣
