Former first Lady Michelle Obama doesn’t mince words in her sharp rebuke of President Donald Trump in her new memoir, condemning him for bragging about sexually assaulting women in 2005, an event that left her wondering how so many women could elected such a “misogynist” into the Oval Office.
In her memoir “Becoming,” set to hit shelves on Tuesday, Mrs. Obama recalled her shock upon learning that Trump would replace her husband, Barack Obama, as president of the United States. I tried to “block it all out,” she said.
She also remembered how heated she was after viewing the infamous “Access Hollywood” video, in which the future president openly bragged about “grabbing women by the p—y.” The Harvard Law grad proceeded to slam Trump for his “birtherism” campaign questioning her husband’s U.S. citizenship, a conspiracy she says put her and her family at risk.
“The whole [birther] thing was crazy and mean-spirited, of course, it’s underlying bigotry and xenophobia hardly concealed,” Obama writes, according to The Washington Post. “But it was also dangerous [and] deliberately meant to stir up the wingnuts and kooks. What if someone with an unstable mind loaded a gun and drove to Washington? What if that person went looking for our girls?”
She continued: “Donald Trump, with his loud and reckless innuendos, was putting my family’s safety at risk. And for this I’d never forgive him.”
Trump didn’t take too kindly to Obama’s criticism, however, and responded with a rant aimed at her husband, his predecessor.
“She got paid a lot of money to write a book and they always expect a little controversy,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday before departing for a trip to France to commemorate Sunday’s 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.
“I’ll give you a little controversy back, I’ll never forgive [President Barack Obama] for what he did to our U.S .military,” he added. “It was depleted, everything was old and tired, and I came in and I had to fix it. What he did to our military made this country very unsafe for you and you and you. I’ll never forgive him for what he did in many other ways, which I’ll talk to you about in the future.”
Meetings between the Obamas and the Trumps have been few and far between since the former first family left and the new first family arrived to the White House in 2017.
Obama doesn’t spend her whole book ranting about the president, however. She also writes of her loving family and reveals her struggle with infertility that led to her daughters, Malia and Sasha Obama, being conceived via in vitro fertilization (IVF).
