Beyonce Knowles‘ mother Tina Lawson credits her granddaughter, Blue Ivy Carter, for helping her walk down the aisle. The superstar mom revealed the details to OWN’s “Black Love” series.
Tina said Carter, who was only 3 years old at the time, convinced her that she should marry actor Richard Lawson. “I went on the boat with Beyoncé, Jay, and Blue and one night we came down and Blue said, ‘Oh y’all look beautiful. When are y’all getting married?’ I think she was about 3. Not that that made us do it but it made us start laughing about it and thinking about it.”
The “For Colored Girls” actor also spoke about his proposal to Tina. “I called her children and I asked for her hand in marriage from them.” He continued, “I thought that that was important because I knew without that, based upon the fact that Tina lives for her children, it didn’t stand a chance, unless they were on board. And I was fortunate enough that they were completely on board and they were just over the top excited about it.”
The fashion designer divorced her husband and father of her daughters Mathew Knowles, in 2011 after 30 years of marriage. She then began publicly dating Richard in 2013. They on a yacht in 2014.
