Smith became a viral sensation over the weekend when his pal, singer Adam Lambert, posted a video on his Instagram page of the duo on a boat listening to Jackson’s “Man In the Mirror.”
“I don’t like Michael Jackson but this is a good song,” Smith says as Lambert pans the camera to him.
Folks quickly took the clip and ran with it before Lambert deleted it from his page. And then, Mills, who starred on the original Broadway run of “The Wiz,” cut Smith down to size.
“@Samsmithworld Don’t come for MICHAEL JACKSON when you wish you have sold as many records and you wish you were the King of Pop like he was,” Mills fired off on Instagram Sunday, Aug. 12. “I’m so tired of you people studying our music, and studying our artist and claiming that you don’t like our music. Go sit your 1 HIT WONDER ass down and learn how to finish a tour. When you can sell as many records as the king of Pop, Michael Jackson then maybe you can say something. So I say to you Mr. Smith have several seats and come for me if you want to.”
Lots of fans applauded Mill’s evisceration of the “Too Good at Goodbyes” singer.
“When chile!! That read!!!😂😂😂👌🏾👌🏾.”
“YOU TELL EM!!! white ‘artists’ steal from Black artists all the time and then turn around and say, ‘I don’t like R&B/Hip Hop/Soul’ or whatever type of Black music they tried to make their own and FAILED AT. It’s sickening, and I’m glad we have a legend speaking the truth so openly.”
“I love that @iamstephaniemills is taking no prisoners. The foolishness coming from these people needs to be called out.”
But others felt Smith is entitled to his own preferences.
“What you on about?? It’s ok not to like an artist 🤷♂️ not everyone is a fan of everything.”
“Explain to me why he HAS to like Micheal Jackson? We all have musical preferences, how is he coming for Micheal when he simply said I don’t like Micheal Jackson but the song is good? Y’all people need to stop this s—. There are plenty of music and musicians I don’t like… It’s my CHOICE.”
“Will you please respect what or who people like or don’t like..he’s not insulting or bashing Michael and his music. He’s just not a fan. Respect it.”
Omg Adam Lambert is so petty for posting a video with Sam Smith sayin “I don’t like Michael Jackson but this is a good song” not only on his story but on his actual page 🤣 pic.twitter.com/0dInO8y0k8
