After Tiffany Haddish claimed her ex-husband abused her in her memoir, William Stewart is taking her to court to clear his name.
Haddish’s ex-husband said he sought legal representation last year and told V-103 in December he believed he and his ex-wife “can settle this.” However, it seems a private settlement has failed and Stewart believes it’ll take a lawsuit to solve the problem.
Documents obtained by TMZ Friday, May 25 claim that Stewart is the man reasonably identifiable as the one Haddish claims as her stalker, abuser and responsible for the death of her unborn child.
Regarding the last allegation in “The Last Black Unicorn,” Stewart said Haddish lost the baby because she had an abortion. Also disputed is the fact that the pair were married twice and divorced twice — Stewart contends they were only married and divorced once. Additionally, he says allegations in a 2011 restraining order that he choked her and became violent when he saw Haddish chatting with another comedian were false and dismissed in court.
Something not publicized in the memoir’s excerpts was a passage alleging Stewart’s mother, who apparently abused him growing up, knew about the abuse and did nothing to stop it.
“For the defendants’ own profit, they painted my clients as abusers in a best-selling book. After a thorough review of the facts and evidence, we know that the assertions made by the defendants about my clients in ‘The Last Black Unicorn’ are patently untrue,” Stewart’s attorney, Michael Sterling says to the gossip website.
“Powerful people and influential corporations can’t intentionally and recklessly destroy someone’s reputation with malicious lies for their own profit,” he adds. “After exhausting our ability to solve this matter privately, we have been left with no choice, but to seek legal recourse. We look forward to our day in court.”
Stewart is seeking $1,000,000 in damages and is suing for libel, slander and defamation. In addition to Haddish, her co-writer, Tucker Max and publisher Simon and Schuster are listed as defendants.
Haddish has not responded to the suit but fans have weighed in and they believe Stewart is just hoping to hit the jackpot.
“How else is he going to make money? Work a REAL job? lmao”
“Now [Tiffany Haddish] is making money and famous, here comes the [ex] claiming abuse. REALLY.”
