A Virginia elementary school bus driver allegedly directed a racial slur at a 5th grader during a field trip last Thursday. Dennot Mirjah, 11, was entering the school bus to put down his lunch box when his white male peers informed him of the incident.
Dennot told CBS 6, “When I got off the bus, they said this, ‘Dennot, the bus driver called you the N word.’
I said ‘she did?!” and they said ‘yeah’ and so that’s when I told my mama.”
Dennot’s mother Margaret Mirjah, who was a chaperone on the trip told the news outlet, “I was really shocked, to even hear him say that (the driver called him the n-word).”
Margaret informed the teacher of the incident who then contacted the principal and then the school board office. Mirjah was contacted by the school board on Monday but was only told that the situation was handled and no further information could be provided because it’s a personnel matter. Dennot’s mother isn’t standing for that and demands an apology from the bus driver. “You hurt an 11-year-old’s feelings, that’s going to stick with him the rest of his life.”
Dinwiddie County School Administration released this statement to CBS 6, “On Thursday, April 12, 2018, Dinwiddie County Public Schools was made aware of allegations of inappropriate comments by an employee towards a student. Upon receipt of the complaint from the parent, an investigation immediately ensued. The investigation was handled according to school board policy and the parent was provided follow-up communication. At this time, Dinwiddie County Public Schools cannot comment on the outcome of the investigation as it is now a personnel matter. “
