Despite her repeated statements that she won’t run for president in 2020, Oprah Winfrey says there’s just one way she could be convinced to head to D.C.
Following calls for her to become the next Commander-in-Cheif, which resurfaced after her rousing speech at the Golden Globes in January, O got encouragement from friends and fans alike to run — including from best pal Gayle King.
But despite overwhelming support for Oprah 2020 to become a thing, only God could convince her to throw her hat into the political ring.
“I went into prayer,” she tells People magazine. “ ‘God, if you think I’m supposed to run, you gotta tell me, and it has to be so clear that not even I can miss it.’ And I haven’t gotten that.”
Even still, Winfrey’s inspiring Cecil B. DeMille Award acceptance speech led her to become a trending topic and wealthy folks were soon lining up to fund her campaign.
“I had people — wealthy, billionaires — calling me up and saying, ‘I can get you a billion dollars. I can run your campaign,”‘ she said. “That many people saying something made me think, ‘Am I at least supposed to look at the question?’ ”
But it seems Winfrey has remained unconvinced, declining to respond to Donald Trump’s tweet that he hopes she runs “so she can be exposed and defeated just like all of the others!”
When the calls for a run first surfaced last year, O said on “The David Rubenstein Show,” “No, that won’t be happening.”
Before adding of Trump, “But, I mean, I did used to think you had to know so much more than I thought you had to know.”
