The Queens, New York cab driver who initially said he took John Legends luggage on accident has been found guilty of stealing.
Agustin Hilario was convicted Tuesday, Feb. 20 of third-degree criminal possession of stolen property after swiping the singer’s Louis Vuitton luggage which contained an expensive pair of cufflinks, Page Six reported.
Legend had testified against Hilario earlier this month at Queens Supreme Court and said the $25,000 to $30,000 diamond-studded cufflinks were a gift from wife Chrissy Teigan. In addition to the anniversary present, the New York Daily News reported a pair of $500 glasses and $500 of clothes were also in the $3,000 bag.
Security footage captured Hilario, who was well known to cops at JFK airport, pushing away the cart upon which the bag sat, taking the luggage and driving away from the airport with it.
“I know I should not have taken it,” Hilario, 64, told police once he was detained. “I made a mistake. There could have been a bomb in there.”
He faces up to seven years in prison for the March 2017 incident that occurred after Legend flew in from France. The cabbie will be sentenced on March 12.
