Venus Breaks Down, Leaves Wimbledon Post-Match Interview After Being Asked About Fatal Car Crash

Venus Williams was at a loss for words when she addressed the news of the accident that killed a 78-year-old man in Flordia, which ultimately made her burst into tears.

“There are really no words to describe, like, how devastating and — yeah,” Williams says at a post-match press conference at Wimbledon Monday, July 3. “I’m completely speechless. It’s just — yeah, I mean, I’m just …”

As Williams wipes away tears, a man on the panel states the tennis star, who scored a 7-6 (7), 6-4 win over Elise Mertens in the opening round, is unable to answer any more questions. They paused for a moment before Williams excused herself. ESPN reported she later returned to continue the post-match press conference.

Williams was hit with a wrongful-death lawsuit as a result of the June 9 collision and after addressing the situation through her attorney, she issued a brief statement on Facebook Friday, June 30.
