Pregnant Serena Williams Stuns On Vanity Fair Cover, Admits ‘I Don’t Know What to Do with a Baby’

Serena Williams has largely kept quiet about her pregnancy and life with fiancé Alexis Ohanian, but now, she’s getting real about her preparations for baby.

“I don’t know what to do with a baby. I have nothing,” Williams tells Vanity Fair in the August 2017 issue. “I’ve done absolutely nothing for the baby room.”

The 23-time Grand Slam winner has been open about never having the desire to get married but has discussed how she planned to raise her children. Yet, Williams thought it was insane for her friend, Jessica Steindorff, to suggest she take a pregnancy test — even though the tennis pro was showing signs of expecting.

“I’ll take it just because (a) to prove you wrong and (b) because it’s fun, whatever,” Williams recalled of her friend buying her a pregnancy test. “It’s like a joke. Why not?”

Williams took the test and was consumed by preparations for a Berlei lingerie-sponsored event before she remembered to check the results. Once she did, she was stunned by the outcome.

“Oh my God, this can’t be. I’ve got to play a tournament,” Williams said. “How am I going to play the Australian Open? I had planned on winning Wimbledon this year.”

Five more tests proved positive, which Williams presented to an equally shocked Ohanian, and at about seven or eight weeks along, she won the Australian Open.

Now, more than six months into her pregnancy, Williams is still in disbelief about her impending bundle of joy.

“If you would have told me last year in October or November that I would have a baby — not be pregnant but have a baby — I would have thought you were the biggest liar in the world,” the 35-year-old said. “This is kind of how I am right now. This is happening sooner than later and it’s going by so fast.”

The first-time mother has no doubt that she’ll return to the tennis court, saying she’ll be back as early as January: “I don’t think my story is over yet.”

Online, fans have applauded the athlete’s photo shoot, which included images with Williams’ Reddit co-founder fiancé.
