Two racist fliers were discovered on a Texas college campus over the weekend, highlighting the cruel history of demeaning Black men in America.

According to The Daily Campus, students at Dallas’ Southern Methodist University found two papers posted inside a campus stairwell Nov. 13 discouraging white women from dating Black men.

It outlined several reasons why a white woman should avoid dating a Black man. They included biracial children being less smart and Black men giving white women STDs. One of the main arguments of the document centers around abuse. A subheading declared Black men are “much more likely to abuse” white women. Then, it lists an unattributed statistic saying “white women who marry Black men multiply their chances of being killed by their spouses by 12.4 – a 1140 percent increase.”

It goes on to cite several incidents of Black men killing and raping white women.

However, the high violence statistics propagated by the alt-right flier are unfounded based on those reported by Daily Kos. It noted that “no more than 2 percent of Black males will commit a violent crime in a given year.”

Additionally, white Americans have ingrained a narrative of Black men raping white women for centuries. Slave codes, enacted beginning in the 1600s through the mid-1800s, created severe punishments for enslaved Africans. Because of that, if a Black man was accused of raping a white woman, his death was almost guaranteed to be the end result, according to Atlanta Black Star.

Also of note is the flier’s creator, shown in the bottom right corner as an alt-right group.

Such groups, as Joy Reid told MSNBC in August, aim to “protect themselves against multiculturalism and immigration.” However, the journalist aligned such collectives with the Ku Klux Klan.

“The alt-right is also white nationalism,” Reid said. “But they differentiate themselves in their own minds [by] saying they are pro-white.”

On Nov. 15, SMU’s administration responded to the fliers in a statement, denouncing the alt-right group’s racist arguments.

“SMU condemns the racist and hateful message in these fliers,” it said in part. “These messages have no place at SMU and are in opposition to SMU’s values and commitment to an environment free from discrimination.”

School officials also encouraged students with information on the fliers to call campus police or the Office of Institutional Access and Equity.

“Concerned students have met with SMU’s Office of Multicultural Student Affairs and plan to meet again,” the statement read.

Students at SMU attempted to combat the racist promotion by covering the school in posters promoting diversity.

According to The Daily Campus, the same fliers have shown up at the University of Oklahoma on Nov. 14 and at the University of Michigan in September.
