Memphis Man Defends Decision to Film Overdosed Heroin Addicts

On Oct. 3, a Memphis, Tennessee man live streamed on Facebook a white couple overdosing on heroin. Since the posting, the video has been viewed 400,000 times.

In a recent interview, the man stands by his decision and addresses the criticism for recording the spectacle.

According to WREG, Courtland Garner saw a crowd of bystanders watching the couple flail and struggle as they rolled around on the sidewalk. He took out his cell phone and began to record the incident. Garner tells reporters that someone else called 911, so he does not regret recording the video.

“What they were doing was children things. It was a spectacle. [And] it made me laugh. They can help themselves,” Garner says. “I know for a fact all the kids are on social media. And when kids see that video, you know what they are going to say? I don’t want to look stupid like that I don’t want to do those drugs.”

WREG reports that the couple snorted heroin in a local Walgreens bathroom and then proceeded to the scene of the incident. After a bystander called 911, Memphis EMTs revived the couple. But the woman involved, identified as Carla Hiers, was arrested for outstanding warrants.
